The past few days have been long. Our sweet doggie Bailey/Mr Bays/B/The Mistah/Bailey Boy (he had SO many names!) passed away on Sunday. He was diagnosed with cancer while we were in FL 30 days ago. He was given 3-6 mths. He didn't make it that long. He started going downhill a little over a wk ago (breathing heavily, not eating, not being able to walk in the end). Hubbie went to CA for a boys trip last Wed and Bays got worse as the days went on. We were hoping he could hold out for hubbie to get home late Sunday night/Monday AM. He didn't.
The sadness that we all feel cannot be communicated. The house is quiet. There is no tap, tap, tap of doggie toenails on the hardwoods. No dog hair to swiffer up. No jingling of a dog collar waking us up in the middle of the night. There are no more loud doggie snores and no chasing rabbit noises while dreaming. We miss all these things. Even though, while he was alive, some of these things were often considered a pain...I would give anything to have them back.
Mr. Bays lived a long life. According to my not so accurate calculations of when I THINK he was born, based on how old he was when I got him at 6 wks, he was 13 years, 2 months & 5 days. Of course that's about 65 in dog years with the new official doggie year calculations. :) I thought it was 7 yrs for every yr...but apparently that varies. Who knew.
We are all adjusting. I think it will take some time. OG seems OK with it, but is asking a lot of questions and is a bit sad. No tears yet. That will come. I think it will be hard coming home in the afternoons and not having a cold wet nose there to greet us. I still can't get used to leaving food sitting around on a table and being able to walk away and not worry about it getting snatched up. And I am still thinking I need to make sure all doors are closed when I go outside so he can't escape.
We love you Mr. Bays. You will be loved and missed forever. You brought joy to our lives that can never be taken away. Enjoy your time in doggie heaven. Steal all the food off tables that you want and get in all of the trash cans and make a mess! This time is for you! We will see you again one day.
As the days go by, we hope time heals. One of my favorite quotes is "this too shall Pass". I sure hope so.
