OG had her first violin lesson last night. She was excited and was looking forward to it. We were scheduled to start at 5:30 but they were running late. We didn’t get in there till about 5:50. Luckily there were books and puzzles etc in the lobby to keep kids entertained. Wheewh!!When we went in we met Ms. Kellie. OG got “fitted” for her violin and got a 1/10 size whatever that means. Basically I think it means TEENIE TINY and OH SO CUTE I CAN’T STAND IT!!

So after she found a violin perfect for her size, Ms. Kellie taught OG her standing positions…resting (feet together) and playing (feet about shoulder width apart). And then we traced both of those positions and her feet onto a little foam pad to take home so she can remember and practice her positions. She was also showed how to hold the violin in resting position (at your side under your right arm) and playing position (just off our shoulder under your jaw). Wheehw! That was a lot to remember in just a short time. She showed her how to pluck the A & E strings. Showed her how to hold her hand on the violin. We didn’t use a bow (rhymes with “show”) last night…we will get to that eventually. Showed her how to bow (rhymes with “how”) at the beginning and end of a performance (OG didn’t want to do this, she thought it was embarrassing, so we need to work on that part at home). Showed her how to switch the violin from resting to playing position (this was a little confusing).

We went over so many things…and we have a sheet of about 7 things to practice 5 nights a week!!!! YIKES! It was confusing to ME, so I KNOW OG was overwhelmed. But she said she enjoyed it. Now when we got home she wanted to show Daddy SOO BADLY! She was so anxious and just wanted to play with it…did not want to hold it correctly or pluck correctly. So this should be interesting. I can see some bribing in my future!!! lol
They mentioned a practice concert she can participate in on Sat at 10am!!! What? A concert? After one not so official lesson? They did say it was basically a group practice with kids her age…1 had just joined last night as she did, and a few had already had 5 or 6 lessons. But basically they were all beginners. So we’ll see….they said it would be good for her to go see others in action….but I also don’t want her to feel like she does not know what she is doing. I mentioned it to her and she said she wanted to go but not be up there by herself. And I told her she most definitely would NOT be alone. There is also a big bday party Sat at 10am…so we would have top miss part of that. And in the 1st part of the party is when the bouncing (same bouncy place where she had her bdays) comes into play. So we need to make some decisions.

So…we might have a great musician on our hands!!! We’ll let you know how it goes form here!
But isn’t she cute!!??
