Red Lights

It happened.  OG got her first red light today at school.  They have green (good behavior), yellow (not making good decisions) and red (not been behaving well and making several bad decisions).  She told me about it when I picked her up.  She almost ALWAYS tells me when she is on something other than green.  It has only been yellow in the past that she has gotten and she always told me about...but it is like some kind of Catholic guilt (except we are Methodist).  She just can't hold it in and has to tell me.  I guess that is a good thing.

So she told me and I thought that this was a time to work on my anger/frustration management skills.  I didn't yell or get mad (yeah me!)...we just talked it out as to WHY she got the red light (the teachers notes said "talking, talking, talking - ALL DAY LONG!!" oops!)...and to what she thought she could do to make it better...and what wrong decisions did she make to lead her to that red light.  WOW...it was...NICE.

She cried the whole way home though (all .4 miles of it, HA) because she KNEW she had disapponted me.  And she didn't ask me not to tell Dadday like she usually does.  ha  I guess she KNEW this had to be told.  But we got home and I told her that because of her red light I was going to take somehting away...that something was her afternoon TV/movies.  She was soo upset.  We also had a talk about how *I* definitely understood.  Because I TOO talked too much in school and got N's in conduct instead of S's.  I told her she came by it honesty, but that was no excuse not to listen and not talk when it was time.

Daddy got home soon after, and she told him and he reacted the same way I did (yeah! parenting skills!)  He told her he was disappointed but hope tomorrow would be a better day.  We had dinner, she did some coloring and read some books and she went to bed.  It was actually a nice evening.

She DID tell me that she didn't like school anymore.  And I tried to explain that I didn't think it was school she didn't like...it was the fact that she got a red light.  To top it all off, her teacher went out on maternity leave in mid February.  So they have had a sub teacher since then, and she is pretty hard on them. Her regular teacher loved on them and they were her babies.  I think she also let some things slide and was not really "mean" to them.  Their sub IS a little strict, but I think she needs to be to position herself as their new "leader".  They don't really like her...but I guess they don't have to.  BUT - I AM happy that the original teacher will be back May 3.  We have gotten more yellow lights since late Feb, than we got all year long with her regular teacher.
